This diversity of fish found in the waters of the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico is one of the reasons anglers from all over the world continue coming to Cancun year after year. Cancun is also known for its year-round fishing opportunities. There really is no bad time to come to Cancun for a fishing trip. There is always something to catch. Different seasons bring a different group of species to the forefront. April through July, for instance, sees the largest number of sailfish compared to other times of the year. September to December, as another example, see huge populations of grouper, snapper and jacks descend on the waters off the coast of Cancun.

When most people think of Cancun fishing they picture the top-of-the-line fishing yachts with anglers using the latest and greatest fishing equipment. These offshore fishing charters are definitely one part of Cancun fishing. But Cancun and its surrounding areas also offer a little diversity when it comes to fishing. This diversity comes in the shape of light tackle fishing and fly fishing in shallower waters, particularly those of the Nichupte Lagoon or Isla Blanca.

We can only offer you a list of the most common species that you find in Cancun, but this list limited. The waters off the coast of Cancun are warm throughout the year and very rich in nutrients, meaning there are all kinds marine creatures that live here both seasonally and permanently. If you are going on an offshore trip to the deeper waters of Cancun, the most commonly caught species include sailfish, marlin, dorado, wahoo, barracuda, and blackfin tuna. If you are going to try out one of the light tackle or fly fishing excursions to the shallower areas of Cancun, you can expect to catch species such as tarpon, permit, snook, and bonefish.
