Riviera Maya
The section from Cancun
ancient Tulum is referred to as the Riviera Maya, a hundred
miles of pristine, ancestral villages, nature parks, ancient
cities and modern developments. Destinations along the
Riviera are easy drives from Cancun and make for great
day trips.
This paradise includes
combination of sand, sun and fun and the Riviera Maya with
its powdered white beaches, turquoise sea, underground
rivers, and archaeological sites welcome everybody to rejoice
in its spectacular environment.
You also can find more
than 250 hotels along the coast from guesthouses and small
hotels to five-star resorts.
The Riviera Maya stars
at Cancun’s airport. The first site you will find
is Puerto Morelos that is 20 km from the airport.
On your way to Puerto
Morelos you will find:
CROCOCUN PARK. It is the perfect
place for the people who seek a close interaction with
animals
and above, with all reptiles. Originally founded as a
crocodile nursery, it is now a small educative zoo with
plenty of emotions where anyone can touch or simply observe
almost any animals living there.
PUERTO MORELOS. Puerto Morelos is the
oldest fishing village on the coast. Restaurants, lodging
and snorkel trips.
From
Puerto Morelos to Playa del Carmen 32 Km.
BOTANICAL GARDEN. Located at 1 km south
from Puerto Morelos, the botanical garden “Alfredo
Barrena Marin”, covers an important amount of jungle,
several animal species and plants of medical and biological
great importance.
RANCHO GRANDE. Horse-back riding on
the beach. Pools, restaurants all this surrounded by
a splendid view.
PLAYA PARAÍSO. This beach attracts those who are looking for sun and peace.
You can also find great hotels and restaurants. Going south
you’ll find PUNTA MAROMA. Don’t miss its
lovely beaches! Travel Channel designed the beach of
this area with the highest average in the rank “The
beast beaches in the world in 2002”.
TRES RÍOS. At just 15 km from
Playa del Carmen there is one of the most interesting
natural parks of the Riviera Maya. It offers several
activities of plenty touch with nature. Snorkeling in
cenotes or in the reefs of this beautiful beaches, horse-back
riding, kayaks, bicycles, etc. Or explore the river by
canoe, drifting under a tropical canopy to a quiet place,
listening to the water, the birds and occasional, racoons.
CAPITAN LAFITTE. Popular seaside hotel
resting on the edge of the clear turquoise bay.
XCALACOCO. Which means twin coconuts
is another paradise for camping. You can also find charming
rustic cabins, palapas, small seafood restaurants, and
public showers working with solar electricity.
PUNTA BETE. 4 km of beach extension
meaning an indisputable tropical fantasy. You’ll
find resorts and a small shopping center.
PLAYA DEL
CARMEN. It
is a meandering strip of white-sand beach, verdant jungle
and fishing villages. Playa del Carmen is located some
45 minutes south from Cancun. The place is called Playa
by initiates and locals alike, and for years its only
claim to fame was the ferries that run from there to
Cozumel. Today it’s one of the most popular destinations
of the Riviera and with reason. It moved from Backpacker’s
paradise to upscale bohemian beach town in just 10 years
without straying too far from its provisional Mexican
roots. There is also an exotic bird sanctuary.
From Playa del Carmen
to Akumal and Puerto Aventuras 37 km.
PLAYACAR. Next to Playa del Carmen
you will find Playacar that is a world of tourist attractions.
Within Playacar there’s a bird sanctuary called
XAMAN-HA in which 200 species of Mexican birds: herons,
macaws, flamingos, parrots and toucans inhabit. It is
a space for preservation and reproduction. An 18 hole
golf course rounds out the lovely Playacar area. This
course is considered one of the most challenging in the
Yucatan Peninsula.
XCARET. Promoted as an eco-archaeological-park
of an extraordinary beauty and unforgettable images.
Site where nature, culture and Mexican traditions gather
in an environment of legends. Explore it’s wonderful
turquoise waters and and experience the magic of its
underground rivers where you can navigate in a life vest.
Visitors receive many options to enjoy and learn in a
voyage that concludes at nightfall with a spectacular
show “Xcaret by Night". Earth-friendly development
at its best: Xotic, Xuberant, Xciting!
PAAMUL. At just 85 km south from Cancun.
We find the camping paradise. It has all the instalments
needed for those who like this sort of adventure. Very
close to the coralline reef so snorkeling is a very popular
activity.
PUERTO AVENTURAS. South of Pammul,
Puerto Aventuras with its shallow bay welcomes visitors
to pass through its gates feeling the peaceful environment
of this exclusive community. It has five-star resort,
bay clubs, scuba shops, dolphin encounters, etc. In Puerto
Aventuras it’s also found one of the most beautiful
Caribbean Beaches and a cenote that overflows to the
sea.
XPU-HA. Extraordinary lonely beaches
and topical jungle paradise that still shows all it’s
mystic beauty. Xpu-ha community is very small, in addition
to beaches; Xpu-ha has a great cenote called “manati”.
KANTENAH. If you are a reading lover
and your idea for vacationing is relaxation surrounded
by nature in peaceful environment you must come to Kantenah
and lay dawn in a Hammock.
AKUMAL (turtle’s
place). Named
after the hundreds of turtles that come to spawn on the
bay’s beaches. Nowadays it offers moderns hotels,
villas, restaurants and shops, to visitors without loosing
the peaceful atmosphere. This beautiful Caribbean corner
is protected by a reef so snorkel and scuba divers have
in Akumal a place for their favourite activities. Beyond
the coral world and in deeper waters there are a serious
of submarine caves separated by canyons.
From
Akumal to Tulum 21 km.
AKTUN CHEN (NATURAL PARK). Located
16 km before Tulum ruins and 4 km after Akumal. It is
a park that has 400 hectares of virgin tropical jungle;
ccasionally wild animals can be observed. In Mayan language
it means “cueva con cenote en su interior” (cave
with cenote in its inner). Caves with stalactites, stalagmites
and natural sculptures shaped by water and calcium carbonate
through five million years. One of them has been adapted
to walk through it.
CHEMUYIL. A beach shaded by coconuts.
Weekend hunt. Favoured spot of recreational vehicles.
Camping. You’ll find a small village that offers
several kinds of vegetables and fruits.
XCACEL. Beach where turtles come to
nest. Eco-archaeological-park with dolphin enclosure.
You can snorkel and scuba-dive in underground rivers
and cenotes. There is also a Mayan Village.
XEL-HA. Which name means “Where
waters flows”, reflects with reason its vocation
to be a natural wonder. It is a lovely small bay of extraordinary
beauty also having a river, cenotes, and caves, surrounded
by tropical jungle paths, multicolor fishes
and more. They offered different and unique activities
for nature lovers.
BAHÍAS
DE PUNTA SOLIMAN. Lovely
site, perfect for those who are searching that tranquillity
of the Riviera Maya. It also a camping area.
TANKAH. The crystalline waters of this
cenote are tempting, but they are some times deceitful,
so take your precautions and take a professional guide
even if you practice snorkel. Fishing is another popular
activity in the area.
TULUM. The biggest archaeological site
that sprinkle the coats of Quintana Roo; Mayan city of
the post classic period, the only one constructed on
a steep at the edge of the sea. It was occupied after
the 1200 B.C. It includes more then 60 historical and
cultural structures of great importance of this enigmatic
Mayan civilization. Its original name was ZAMA “amanecer” (dawn)
in Maya language. Tulum is smallish, can be toured in
an hour or two and offers sweeping views of the Caribbean
and coast in both directions. Nice beach below settlement,
but swimming is not recommended due to strong undertows.
Restaurants and shops at the visitor’s center located
at the entrance on the highway.
From
Tulum to Punta Allen 30 km.
SIANKA’AN
BIOSPHERE. One of the
most important reserves of the Mayan world and the biggest
in Quintana Roo. Its name means “where heaven was
born”. In its 526,000 protected hectares an endless
wealthy of ecosystems live and interact; jungle, plantations
of mangrove trees, savanna, coast dunes, reefs, cenotes,
lagoons and one of the biggest bays in Quintana Roo.
It was declared human patrimony by the UNESCO in 1987.
BOCA PAILA. Is a small fishing village.
Sportsmen love it for its bonefish and the local lodge
organize deep-sea fishing trips. Fly-fishing is favourite
attraction.
PUNTA ALLEN. Lies at the far end of
the reserve. It is a peaceful fishing village mainly
lobster. It offers the opportunity to interact with an
unaltered natural beauty.
